Drug Asset Forfeiture
The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is responsible for initiating legal proceedings to permanently have ownership of property such as cash, vehicles, or real estate from individuals transferred to the Sate of Louisiana when that property is suspected of being connected to criminal activity particularly drug offenses, money laundering and racketeering offenses.
Once transferred, these assets are allocated as required by law as:
- 60% to the Law Enforcement Agency
- 20% to the Criminal Court Fund
- 20% to the District Attorney’s Office.
The purpose is to deter, disrupt, and dismantle criminal organizations by removing their profit motives and tools for trade. In some instances, the funds are allowed to compensate victims for losses resulting from criminal activity.
